Project Description

  • Project name: Strategic inland barging study
  • Project location: Rotterdam, The Netherlands
  • Name of client: Rotterdam Port Authority
  • Period: 2002 – 2003

Description of the project

The Port of Rotterdam considers inland barging to be one of its major assets in the competitive container market in the Hamburg-Le Havre range. During the past decade the hinterland transport of containers has been subject to a significant modal shift from trucking to inland barging.

The resulting barge volume might offer possibilities for efficiency increase if suitable co-operation concepts between inland barge operators can be developed and implemented. The Port of Rotterdam commissioned a study to develop a number of co-operation concepts and select an optimal concept to guide the Port of Rotterdam in its policy for container barge improvement.
