Description of the project

Study to define projects and measures to improve the nautical accessibility of the Botlek area, in the Port of Rotterdam. Two strategic projects were developed and implemented for that purpose: removal of the ‘Doorn’ (underwater dam) and deepening by 1.5 to 2 m of the Nieuwe Waterweg, a stretch of 30 km of the Rhine River, between Rotterdam and the North Sea. After 5 years of studies, licencing and preparations the project was executed in 2018. Environmental impacts will be closely monitored over a 5-10 year period.
